Did you know there are still thousands of Asiatic Bears (moon bears) living their lives in tiny cages at bile farms?
Art inspirations: Moon bears are classed as VULNERABLE. I am aware with so many of our worlds’ animals on the ICUN Red List, with varying states of THREAT to their species, it all just joins the noise of our everyday lives. (Sad, but true.)
However, Moon bears are actively sought and captured; then kept in tiny cages throughout their whole lives, so that bile can be periodically extracted for use in traditional oriental medicines and cosmetics. Between China and Vietnam, it is estimated that around 10,000 moon bears are kept captive.
I find this utterly unacceptable, and this barbaric abuse has been my motivation and inspiration behind this painting.
Threats to species: Loss of habitat, human exploitation in bear farms.
Name meaning: Esmé – meaning ‘beloved’.
Flower symbolism: I have used the flowers of the Magnolia tree in this painting, with bear sat amongst the branches and her paw bracing a lower branch.
Magnolia trees represent different things to different cultures and locations around the world. The meanings I have chosen to embrace for the purpose of this painting and due to its pink flowers are: youth, innocence, joy and the trees known healing properties from use in traditional medicines.
Moon bears need to be allowed to rediscover their joy, through freedom.
The Painting: All my original art paintings are created using professional acrylic paints and lightfast acrylic inks. Once finished, paintings are sealed with three coats of Liquitex Professional satin varnish.
On the reverse of the painting, I write a message around the edge of the frame. This message comes to me in the moment, is connected to the piece of art I have completed and is a message of encouragement or hope for the buyer. These are secret messages and can only be viewed (prior to purchase) within my online shop.

Original Art MUST NOT be cleaned with any cleaning
products. Lightly dust with a clean, dry duster only.
Dropping or repeated bumps to the canvas board or paper, will damage the integrity of the stock and / or art surface.
While every effort is made to use top quality and lightfast art mediums and stock, bright
sunlight and harsh persistent lighting could start to fade the colour of the artwork over an
extended amount of time.
Constant extremes of heat or cold could also impact the integrity of the art. Although the Original Art has been coated with a UV protective varnish; it is strongly recommended that the artwork be professionally framed using a UV reducing and low reflection glass, to further protect the artwork and be able to view unhindered from all vantage points.
